Dirty Computers = Short Life Span
My day job is to fix a variety of computers and printers for a warranty depot on all the major brands. We often run across PCs that are just beyond words and we just need to take pictures to show our co-workers how ‘bad’ it really was. This PC came from the Alberta oilfields and was obviously kept somewhere in a shop with no protection whatsoever.
At first, some of the ladies where scared to look inside the case because they thought there was a dead mouse inside it! No dead mouse here, the dust bunny inside this computer is just that big. We used an entire can of compressed air in order to clean out the dust on the insides of this machine, it was disgusting! If you have a PC in a shop, do yourself a favor and build a small cabinet with lots of holes for fresh air intake. Cover those holes with some-kind of screen or filters in order to keep the dust out of the electronic components.
Another issue that will kill your computer much faster than dirt is heat so remember to keep this new cabinet well ventilated. You may even want to purchase a small fan to be mounted permanently depending on how hot your building is and the location where the cabinet is. I don’t know if you work in a refrigerator or a foundry so you will have to determine the heat factor on your own. Just remember that a cool computer will run faster and more reliably than hot computer.
If you have the time and inclination to open up your computer case I am sure you will find lots of dust and dirt on the inside. Get yourself some compressed air and a vacuum and get to work. Without touching anything, start blowing compressed air around your parts especially concentrating on all the fans. Don’t forget to turn on the vacuum cleaner and follow the air at the same time to suck up all the dust that will get blow around the room. Think of it this way for a better example. It’s the same concept that the dentist does when he washes your mouth with water and vacuums up the excess at the same time.
