Computer Security For Your Home | Anti-virus Firewall Router

If You Connect To The Internet You Need Extra Security

In this article, I would like to address a topic that is very important to us at Mr. Tech; one that needs to be addressed so that you also take it very seriously: security. It concerns you especially if you have a high speed Internet connection such as Satellite, Cable or ADSL and don’t yet have virus protection and a router with firewall capabilities. Now, I don’t want to scare you with this topic, but I read an article recently that basically said you have to be “nuts these days to be connected to the Internet without any security features”, and I agree.

Without boring you, a firewall is basically a big strong door that gets locked between you and the Internet. Access in and out of your computer is granted only to you, leaving all the wrong doers out in the cold.  As for virus protection, ask anyone who has been infected and had all their critical files disappear; they will tell you how important it is.

The bottom line is that your computer needs protection just as much as your house, car and other valuables do. Anti-virus in this day and age is a must. If you don’t have it, don’t wait another day.  As for the firewall, you should strongly consider adding it to your “must have” list. As a bonus, firewalls come built into the router, which is like having a cable splitter. Not only will you be protected, you can usually connect up to four computers to the internet at the same time.

Hackers Can See Inside Your Computer

Now, you might be wondering what exactly it is that hackers can see about your computer on the Internet. There are many tools online that can show you what is open and what is secure. It’s not really cool to have your computer wide open for the world to see, make sure to look into this sooner rather than later.

As mentionned earlier, a router can block (lock the door) to anyone trying to get into your computer from a high-speed connection. It’s normal for your operating system to be available to a degree, but watch out if the site can detect your computer name or the
services you are running!  If it can, then you are vulnerable.

Use Free Online Scanners To Get A Second Opinion

Many big companies will offer free online virus scanning anytime you want, as many times as you need.  It’s always free, the only catch is that it doesn’t protect your computer in real-time. Neither does it protect you from incoming and outgoing emails.  But, if you think you might be infected with a virus, this is a great way to check.  It’s also useful as a FREE second opinion if your existing anti-virus program isn’t working properly, or lacks your trust!
