Redo Your Changes With This Keyboard Shortcut
Save Time And Redo Your Last Action
Nothing is worse than trying to type a letter and having to switch back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse. There you are in a middle of letter and you decided that a particular word should be in bold type, so you take one hand off the keyboard and grab the mouse to highlight that word and click on the bold button. This is okay if you just have one word to change, but what if you have many more to change? Are you going to highlight and turn each word bold one at a time? Hopefully not!
Use Ctrl-Y (hold down the “Ctrl” and then the “Y” key) to repeat a particular task. You still have to highlight and bold the first word,
but after that, just place the cursor over the word you want to have in bold and hit Ctrl-Y.
CTRL-Y remembers the last task you performed
It doesn’t just remember changing a word to bold type, but any function that needs to be repeated. Let’s give it a try! Open MS Word (Words 97, 2000 or XP) and type “Hello, How are you today?” Turn bold the word “Hello” the way you would usually do it. Now lets turn bold the word “How” using Ctrl-Y (First, place the cursor anywhere in the word “How”, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the Y key). You will notice that “How” is now in bold type and without relying on unnecessary steps.
For practice, continue to turn bold the remaining words of the sentence. Remember, this shortcut is not only used for the bold
function. It can be used for other functions as well, such as changing text fonts or even text color. What a great tool! And it can even be applied in other Microsoft programs like Excel and PowerPoint.
