Try this trick next time your USB device will no longer work

It happens every once in a while, but a perfectly good working USB mouse or USB keyboard may stop working for no apparent reason. Shutting down and restarting your computer or laptop often has little or no effect and in many cases your USB device still refuses to work properly. If you try the USB device on another computer or laptop you may notice that it is working perfectly fine, yet when you go back to your own computer it just refuses to give you any love!?!

Here’s the trick, try plugging your USB device into a different USB port on your laptop or computer. If your device is connected via a USB hub then try connecting it directly into the USB port on your computer or laptop instead. If your device is connected in the front USB port, try connecting it in the back and vice versa. This forces the operating system to re-detect your USB mouse or keyboard and install it again. If after doing this it still won’t work you may have other problems or the USB device may indeed be broken. If that is the case, make sure you have tested it on a different computer or laptop before you decide to replace it with a brand new one.

  • Mouse
  • Keyboard
  • External Hard Drive
  • External Floppy Drive
  • External DVD Drive
  • Record Player
  • Printer
  • Scanner

One last tip you should know about USB devices. There is USB1 and USB2 with the big difference being speed. If you connect a USB1 device into a USB2 port it will work but at the slower speed of USB1. If on the other hand you connect a USB2 device into a USB1 port, it will work as well but at the slower USB1 speed, therefore losing the speed advantages that USB2 offers. I am telling you this because I often see USB hubs for sale at the dollar store and they are always USB1 which is slower if you have been paying attention.
