Skip The Recycle Bin When Deleting Files

Save Disk Space Bypass The Recycle Bin

Sometimes you want to delete some very large files but you know that by doing that you are simply moving them to the recycle bin and still using up valuable disk space. If your reason for deleting the file was to reclaim space, then you still have to visit the recycle bin and empty it...extra effort, extra clicks, more wasted time.

Not if you hold down the SHIFT key before you click or press the old DELETE button. That's right, you heard me correctly, select the file(s) you want to delete, press and hold down the SHIFT key and click DELETE - your files will not go to the recycle bin, they will be permanently deleted! Beware, there is no coming back, your files are gone forever! You have been warned.

Are Your Files Really Deleted Forever?

Alright, so maybe your files aren't gone forever since you can use file recovery software to retrieve them but that is a topic for another article. Now, if you want to delete files permanently without ever going to the recycle bin and avoid having to hold down the SHIFT key, there is an option available for that as well. All you have to do is right-click on the recycle bin icon, choose properties and look for a check box option 'Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted' and select it.

From now on, every time you delete any file, it will be gone and won't be taking up extra disk space by sitting in your recycle bin. A word of warning, be careful if you set this on a shared computer as the other users may not be so thrilled to find out their files are gone because of something you did.
